A study of the dry forest communities in the Dominican Republic Anais da ABC (AABC)
García-Fuentes,Antonio; Torres-Cordero,Juan A.; Ruiz-Valenzuela,Luis; Lendínez-Barriga,María Lucía; Quesada-Rincón,Juan; Valle-Tendero,Francisco; Veloz,Alberto; León,Yolanda M.; Salazar-Mendías,Carlos.
This paper is a floristic and phytosociological study of the dry forest communities of the Dominican Republic. A total of 69 relevés in dry forest biotopes were carried out. The samples were subsequently subjected to Detrended Correspondence Analysis for the determination and study of possible groupings. The study does not cover tree formations growing on serpentines, nor the so-called semideciduous forests, peculiar to areas with higher rainfall. A total of nine phytocoenoses were identified. The most significant results led to the description of six new phytosociological associations: Simaroubetum berteroani(thorny dry forest on coastal dunes), Phyllostylo rhamnoidis-Prosopidetum juliflorae (southern Dominican disturbed dry forest), Consoleo...

Arboreous vegetation of an alluvial riparian forest and their soil relations: Porto Rico island, Paraná river, Brazil BABT
Campos,João Batista; Souza,Maria Conceição de.
The dynamics of alluvial deposits in floodplains forms islands and sandbanks. Deposits frequently accumulate at the river margins and on islands with consequent side growths. One of these sandbanks which started to form in 1952 annexed an area of 12.4ha to the Porto Rico island (53º15’W and 22º45’S). At present a forest fragment of approximately 2.0 ha exists in this place. The structural analysis of arboreous vegetation of this fragment showed a floristic gradient related to the physical and chemical variations of the substratum. High density of pioneer species associated to the absence of recruitment of new individuals of these and other successional categories indicated that the forest was impaired in its succession process. This fact could be...

Availability and use of woody plants in a agrarian reform settlement in the cerrado of the state of Goiás, Brazil Acta Botanica
Tunholi,Vanessa Pessanha; Ramos,Marcelo Alves; Scariot,Aldicir.
Protected areas are important sources providing plant resources for human populations, and contributing to the livelihood and income of families. To test the ecological apparency hypothesis, that there is positive relationship between the visibility of a species and its use, we conducted an ethnobotanical survey in the protected area of the Itaúna rural settlement in the municipality of Planaltina, in the state of Goiás, in central Brazil. The phytosociological parameters were obtained in 5.6 ha area of the Brazilian cerrado (savanna), and the ethnobotanical survey conducted with semi-structured interviews with 75 people. There was a weak positive correlation between the use value and the phytosociological parameters. A principal component analysis showed...

Characterization of the Weed Flora in Rice Areas under Distinct Cropping Systems and Herbicide Managements Planta Daninha
CONCENÇO,G.; ANDRES,A.; SCHREIBER,F.; SILVA,A.F.; MOISINHO,I.S.; CORADINI,M.C..
ABSTRACT: The aim of this study was to evaluate the occurrence of weeds in flooded rice areas, as a function of planting system and herbicide programmes in the previous cropping year. The experiment was installed in field conditions, in randomized complete blocks design, arranged in factorial scheme 3 x 2, with eight replications. In factor A, treatments consisted on conventional tillage, minimum tillage and no till cropping systems, coupled to the application (traditional control) or not (semi-ecological system) of herbicides (Factor B). One year after rice cultivation, preceding the planting of the next cropping season, phytosociological evaluations of the weed communities present in the treatments were carried out. We assessed the overall infestation...

Colonization-related functional traits of plants in a 50-hectare plot of secondary tropical forest Acta Botanica
Candido,Helder Marcos Nunes; Miazaki,Ângela; Pontara,Vanessa; Bueno,Marcelo Leandro; Solar,Ricardo; Gastauer,Markus; Meira-Neto,João Augusto Alves.
ABSTRACT The growth-survival trade-off hypothesis states that functional traits of stem, wood, leaves and fruits govern acquisitive and conservative strategies of plant species that grow/survive differently in forests. We aimed to determine whether heterogeneity during the colonization of a secondary Atlantic Forest fragment causes differences in colonization-related traits and determines taxonomic composition of subplots. A total of 5,078 subplots were censused with leaf and fruit traits and height measurements being determined for each tree of each species, and with averaged-abundance-weighted values calculated for each subplot. A dendrogram was generated from the taxonomic composition of subplots using Sorensen similarity and UPGMA clustering. A total...

Community structure and tree diversity in a subtropical forest in southern Brazil Biota Neotropica
Bordin,Kauane Maiara; Ferreira,Letícia Daiana; Rosina,Adriano; Malacarne,Marciana; Zanotelli,Patricia; Adami,Samuel Fernando; Vendruscolo,Giovana Secretti.
Abstract: Local and regional environmental variations lead to different species composition, creating transitional areas. An example is the Araucaria and Seasonal forest in southern Brazil. Our objectives were (1) to describe the tree community structure and composition of a subtropical forest in southern Brazil and (2) to compare the floristic relationships between two forest typologies (Araucaria and Seasonal forest) in order to characterize the study area and the distribution patterns of tree species. We conducted a survey at Chapecó National Forest (in southern Brazil) in an area of 1.2 ha, where all individuals ≥ 30 cm of circumference at breast height were sampled. Community structure was described using the traditional phytosociological parameters....

COMPARACION FLORISTICA DE DOCE PARCELAS EN BOSQUE DE TIERRA FIRME EN LA AMAZONIA PERUANA Acta Amazonica
RUOKOLAINEN,Kalle; TUOMISTO,Hanna; RÍOS,Richer; TORRES,Alberto; GARCÍA,Mildred.
Floristic composition of twelve plots, 25 m by 25 m, was studied in the Peruvian Amazonia in order to investigate if it were possible to use a part of the flora as an indicator of the changes observed in other components of the flora. Floristic similarities among the plots were calculated using six different taxonomic or physiognomic groups: ferns, the families Melastomataceae and Myristicaceae, trees thicker than 2.5 cm diameter at breast hight (DBH), trees between 2.5 cm and 5 cm DBH, and trees thicker than 5 cm DBH. The similarities were used for agglomerati ve classifications of the plots and for analyzing the correlations among the different groups of plants with Mantel's test. The results indicate that floristic changes were similar in all of the...

Comparative phytosociology of tree sinusiae between contiguous forests in different stages of succession BJB
CAVALCANTE,A. DE M. B.; SOARES,J. J.; FIGUEIREDO,M. A..
The Baturité Mountain Range, located in the State of Ceará (BRA), displays on its highest levels a vegetation viewed as a disjunction from the Atlantic Forest in the East of Brazil. Among the various attributes associated with this vegetation, the abundance of water resources and a high biodiversity have a more outstanding relevance. However, in view of the current accelerated deforestation process, those attributes may be threatened in a near future. Therefore, the present work is a comparative study with its focus on vegetal community organization (tree sinusiae) and the floristic similarity and the phytodiversity of two areas in different successive stages, preserved and deforested 24 years ago. The aim of that intent was to obtain information that...

Different sizes of the smallest individual sampled and their interpretations: case study in the seasonally dry forest PFB - Pesquisa Florestal Brasileira
Arruda, Daniel Meira; Batista, Márcio Luiz; Simão, Marcos Vinicius Ribeiro de Castro; Duque-Brasil, Reinaldo; Ferreira-Júnior, Walnir Gomes; Schaefer, Carlos Ernesto Gonçalves Reynald.
The dry forests, widely distributed in Brazil, are formations subject to different sampling method. Consequently, the data generated may affect the comparison among other vegetation formations. Therefore, this study presents and discusses changes caused by sampling vegetation using circumference at soil height (CSH) ≥ 10 cm and circumference at breast height (CBH) ≥ 15 cm. Different criteria provide an ambiguous vision of a same forest fragment, resulting in different structure and species richness.

Ecology of naturalized invasive species Lindernia dubia (L.) Pennell in the Netherlands Naturalis
Simons, E.L.A.N.; Jansen, M.G.M..
Lindernia dubia (L.) Pennell, a North American species, is still a rare and ephemerical neophyte in the Netherlands, but is invading the country rapidly now. We expect it to become a threat to plant biodiversity in Dutch wetlands. To describe its ecological and phytosociological position and assess its possible risk status we investigated known sites in the Netherlands. Being a pioneer species on open, muddy soil, more or less rich in nutrients, more or less acid, it occurs in different phytosociological classes: Littorelletea uniflorae, Phragmitetea, Isoeto-Nanojuncetea and Bidentetea tripartitae. We consider the species as possibly harmfull to vegetations belonging to the Littorelletea uniflorae and some associations of the Isoeto-Nanojuncetea, as those...
